Grieg Elegaic Melodies

EDVARD GRIEG        1843-1907

Elegaic melodies       Op. 34

1.    Hjertesar
2.    Varen

The years 1878 and 1879 mark a noticeable gap in Grieg's creative life, whether due to ill health (the composer's own explanation) or his increasing tenency towards self- criticism, is hard to say.

In the spring of 1880, however, Grieg resumed composition by setting to music six songs by O.J.Vinje, a poet and prose writer of peasant origin, who drew inspiration from the sternness and beauty of his native Norway.

The following year, Grieg arranged two of the songs, 'Varen' (The Spring') and 'Hjertesar' ('The Wounded One'), for string orchestra under the title of Elegaic Melodies, Opus 34.
