Haydn - Symphony No.82
We're delighted to welcome back Maria in an exciting and diverse programme.
The evening begins with Nikos Skalkottas’ Five Greek Dances, a vibrant suite that captures the spirit of Greek folk music through modernist eyes. Skalkottas infuses these traditional melodies with rhythmic complexity and bold orchestration, offering a fresh and dynamic take on Greece’s cultural heritage.
Next, we will be treated to Johannes Brahms’ Violin Concerto, one of the cornerstones of the violin repertoire. This grand and lyrical masterpiece marries virtuosic brilliance with deep emotional depth. Its fiery finale draws inspiration from Hungarian dance, ensuring a thrilling display of both solo and orchestral dialogue.
The evening concludes with Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 82, also known as The Bear. This symphony is a delightful example of Haydn’s wit and inventive orchestration, particularly in the lively final movement, which evokes a bear dance. Full of charm and energy, it encapsulates Haydn's playful yet complex style.
